Federal Hill, as the estate is also known, was designed by Judge John Rowan and built mostly by slaves between 1795 and 1818. Rowan, who served on both the Kentucky Court of Appeals and U.S. Senate, used his home for lavish entertaining during a colorful era of kentucky history. Guests here included Henry Clay and Aaron Burr, but the visitor who would immortalize the home was Stephen Collins Foster.
Foster, the Romans' cousin, came from Pittsburgh to visit during the 1850's. Charmed by the house, he made his mark in song - now Kentucky's state song, "My Old Kentucky Home".
During the summer months visitors may enjoy dozens of Foster's song at "The Stephen Foster Story" outdoor musical, permed at the park's outdoor amphitheater.
